Our Governors

 

We currently have a vacancy on our governing body for a parent governor which we are now looking to fill. Please see the attached letter for more information.

What we do

The purpose of governance is to provide confident, strategic leadership and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance. The governing body in our school has a legal responsibility which can be summarised by three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff;
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent.

Our Approach

The Hiltingbury Governors, in partnership with the headteacher, provide effective strategic leadership and strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life.  We are committed to an outstanding experience for all our pupils enabling them to learn effectively and achieve high standards across a relevant and rich curriculum. The day-to-day running of the school is the responsibility of the head teacher and staff who create a rewarding, enjoyable and safe learning experience.

Our approach is one of commitment, honesty and openness in the performance of our duties. We pride ourselves in the integrity of our members and our balance of rigorous holding to account with positive support.

Governor Meetings

We meet every half term as a full Governing Body, and have two main sub committees. These are the Resources committee, responsible for financial aspects of the school, and the Curriculum and Standards committee whose purpose is to focus on the curriculum itself as well as children’s attainment and progress. There is also a Pay Committee and a Headteacher Performance Committee.

Individually, governors may also have specific responsibility for a subject or priority within the school, and will attend meetings for that area as needed. These visits are a valuable opportunity for governors to work closely with staff members to gain a deeper understanding of some of the initiatives used in school to improve and sustain progress.

All Governors receive a full induction and further training relevant to their committee membership and specific link area.  Training is provided by Hampshire Governor Services.

Who we are

Hiltingbury Junior School Governing body is made up of representatives from staff, the local authority, parents and members of the community.  Our diverse backgrounds give us a wide range of experience and views, enabling us to make informed decisions about the school collectively. 

We welcome and value feedback from parents so please do come and speak to us at school events or we can be contacted via the school office.

Personal Profiles of Governor

Mr Simon Hayes I joined as a parent governor in March 2020 and have a son in the Junior school and a daughter in the Infants school. I'm driven to help the school evolve and move forward and to assist by using my Relationship Management skills and experience in industry to achieve this. Hiltingbury Junior School is such a special place for children to attend and flourish.
     

Mrs Laura Robinson

I am a primary school teacher, with over 20-years’ experience. I’ve taught in all age groups from Year R to Year 6.  In 2009 I completed the headteacher’s qualification and I am a member of the senior leadership team at my current school.  My three children currently attended the Infant and Junior schools and I am keen to ensure the school provides a high quality, motivating,  and engaging curriculum that encourages children to try their best.
Mrs Liz Hansford

Having recently taken semi-retirement from my role in secondary education, I am now able to bring my experience to fulfilling the role of Governor at Hiltingbury, a school close to my heart.  The many roles I have held in schools will enable me to share my expertise, having worked at a number of levels, both academically and pastorally, with children ranging from Year 5 to Year 11. I have, for several years, been heavily involved in the Whole School Literacy initiatives in school, which is so vital in ensuring our children can access all parts of the demanding curriculum facing them. I am delighted to be able to contribute and to ‘give back’ to the continuing success of Hiltingbury Junior School, as a Governor. My own two children attended the school some years ago now and they left as confident, independent and happy children, ready for the next phase of their education. I hope I can help to ensure that outcome is repeated with our next generation of Hiltingbury children. 

Mrs Charlotte Hartley

As the Deputy Headteacher at Hiltingbury Junior School, I was delighted to take on the role of staff governor in September 2021. Within my position at the school, my passion and priority lies within ensuring we provide the highest standard of education for our pupils with continuous improvements for teaching, learning and pupil wellbeing at the centre of this. Now within my governor role, I can share my experience and knowledge of the school’s improvement plan and strategic direction to further support the ongoing development of our whole curriculum.

Nancy Cardinal  

I am a primary school teacher who has worked in the education sector for over 20 years. I have experience of both state and private education and am currently an assistant
headteacher at a local private school. I am passionate about child led education and being immersed in the outdoors. I have children that are in all stages of education, including two at Hiltingbury Junior school and one at Thornden as well as two at university. Now as a governor, I am hoping to use my experience, both as a parent and a teacher to aid the school in providing the best possible educational experience for the children.

Susan Roscoe
I am thrilled to become a member of the Hiltingbury Junior School’s Governing Board; especially having previously been a school parent here and witnessed ‘first hand’ the school’s high standards across all aspects of education. I am already able to see that these standards have continued throughout my years away from the school.
I have worked in the support side of education for over 16 years, and many members of my family (including my daughter) are teachers. I am very aware that despite the reward of seeing children learning successfully, teaching is a highly pressured career choice. In line with my current workplace role, I have a particular interest in the delivery of teaching to children with special educational needs and the health, safety and wellbeing of all children and adults in education. I very much hope I will be able to support the Hiltingbury team with my current knowledge and experiences.
