Year 4 Weekly Highlights

After the excitement of Beowulf, we are now working hard to wrap up some of our Spring topics, ready to introduce our new summer topics.  Our work on fractions has continued with the children converting mixed number fractions to improper fractions, followed by converting improper fractions back to mixed number fractions with the use of pictorial representation and the use of multiplication and division strategies.  Our fraction topic continues with adding and subtracting mixed number fractions beyond a whole, before we wrap up this topic.  It has been a delight watching the children confidently grasp the concepts around this topic, mostly since it seems to be in food contexts such as pizzas and chocolate bars!  In English, we have embarked on a week of poetry based on the African story of the Village that Vanished.  Hopefully the children will be able to share some of their poems and they can be on display in the hall.  The children have been detectives in history this week, as they use artefacts as clues to identify the Anglo-Saxon warrior found in a burial ship in Sutton Hoo in Suffolk.  With dates on the coins, an elaborately decorated shield and Christening spoons, the evidence pointed to the super king Raedwald. The children were further able to ask perceptive questions about the artefacts showing their skills as inquisitive historians keen to discover the past.

All the children were able to visit the library on Monday and choose new books.  Please do hear your child read or talk about what they are reading.  Mrs Thomas is always keen to recommend books to the children, if your child would like some guidance.  We are continuing to give house points for up to date reading records and especially those records that show an enthusiasm for lots of great reading.  We are also really keen to hear recommendations for exciting books too.
