Year 6 Weekly Highlights 3.10.25

This week in Year 6 has been both inspiring and educational as we delved into important themes around adversity and kindness, alongside continuing our learning in maths.

The highlight of the week was our exciting trip to the Mayflower Theatre to see the Welsh National Opera. It was amazing to watch the different sections of the orchestra play together — the strings, brass, woodwind, and percussion! Even better, we got to join in and make music ourselves, which was so much fun. It was a brilliant experience to see live music and feel part of it.

We were fortunate to welcome visitors from the Eastleigh Food Bank, who spoke to the children about the challenges many families in our local community face. Hearing firsthand about the struggles some people endure has been eye-opening for the children. Our students have shown great compassion and responded with generosity by donating food items to support those in need. It’s wonderful to see them taking action and understanding how even small contributions can make a big difference.

Our classroom discussions about adversity have been further enriched by our reading of Safiyyah’s War. This powerful text explores the difficulties faced by the main character, Safiyyah. As part of this project, the children have written heartfelt reply letters to Isabelle, a character from the book, expressing thoughts and feelings about the events that have occurred through the book so far.

On the maths front, we have been focusing on adding and subtracting decimal numbers. The children have been practising strategies to handle decimals confidently, building important skills that will support their future learning.
