Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) Information at HJS
An ELSA is a member of staff who is trained to support children in the development of their emotional literacy. ELSA time gives children an extra layer of nurturing support in school with a trusted adult.
What is emotional literacy?
- Recognising and understanding our own feelings and those of others
- Developing high self esteem and positive interactions with others
- Being emotionally literate helps children to better focus on their learning
Some of the areas the ELSA may work on:
- Recognising emotions
- Self esteem
- Social skills
- Friendship skills
- Developing strategies to cope with strong feelings - Anger management and anxiety
- Loss and bereavement
- Family change
How does the ELSA work?
- A regular slot during the school week for 20 - 30 minutes
- Sessions can be individual or in small groups and tailored to the child’s individual needs
- Sessions are fun and may include art therapy, role play, puppets, board games and stories
- A pupil’s progress will be reviewed with their class teacher
