Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) Information at HJS
An ELSA is a member of staff who is trained to support children in the development of their emotional literacy. ELSA time gives children an extra layer of nurturing support in school with a trusted adult.
What is emotional literacy?
😊 Recognising and understanding our own feelings and those of others
😊 Developing high self esteem and positive interactions with others
😊 Being emotionally literate helps children to better focus on their learning

😊 Recognising emotions
😊 Self esteem
😊 Social skills
😊 Friendship skills
😊 Developing strategies to cope with strong feelings - Anger management and anxiety
😊 Loss and bereavement
😊 Family change
How does the ELSA work?
😊 A regular slot during the school week for 20 - 30 minutes
😊 Sessions can be individual or in small groups and tailored to the child’s individual needs
😊 Sessions are fun and may include art therapy, role play, puppets, board games and stories
😊 A pupil’s progress will be reviewed with their class teacher
